What happens when the original plugin updates?
If the customisation uses WordPress hooks, it survives the update automatically because the customisation code lives outside the plugin files. If the customisation required direct code changes to plugin files, those changes will need to be reapplied after the update — which is why we document every direct change clearly and recommend testing updates on staging before applying them to live.
Is it ever better to build a new plugin instead of customising an existing one?
Yes — when the required customisation is extensive enough that maintaining it across plugin updates becomes more expensive than owning a standalone solution, or when the existing plugin's behaviour conflicts with your requirement in a way that hooks cannot cleanly override.
