Overview

What WordPress Multisite Setup involves

WordPress Multisite allows multiple websites to run from a single WordPress installation — sharing the same codebase, plugins, and themes while keeping content, users, and settings separate between sites. It is the right architecture for agencies managing client sites, franchises with regional sites, or organisations with multiple branded properties.

Setting up Multisite correctly requires server configuration changes, careful database setup, and decisions about domain mapping, user roles, and plugin access that are difficult to change later. We handle the full setup and document the network architecture for your team.

Why it matters

What a strong WordPress Multisite Setup delivers

01

One WordPress to manage many sites

Update plugins and themes once at the network level instead of logging into each site individually. Significant time saving for anyone managing more than three WordPress sites.

02

Sites stay isolated despite sharing infrastructure

Each site has its own content, users, and settings. A problem on one site does not affect others. Network admins control what plugins and themes individual site admins can access.

03

Consistent platform, lower hosting cost

Running ten sites on one Multisite installation costs less than ten separate hosting accounts and requires less maintenance overhead.

Who it's for

Strong-fit situations

Each card describes a practical use case, not just a keyword variation. That keeps the page helpful and index-worthy.

  • Fit 01

Agencies managing multiple client sites from one install

Multisite reduces the overhead of maintaining separate WordPress installations for each client or project.

  • Fit 02

    Franchises with regional site variations

Each regional site has its own content and admin while sharing the same theme, plugins, and platform updates.

  • Fit 03

    Organisations with multiple branded properties

A parent company with several brands can manage all sites from a single dashboard without giving each brand access to the others.

  • Fit 04

    Educational institutions with department-level sites

Departments or faculties get their own editing environment while IT manages updates, security, and hosting centrally.

  • Fit 05

Businesses launching a network of location-specific sites

Location pages with unique content for each city or region, managed from one WordPress installation with central control.

FAQ

Questions about WordPress Multisite Setup

Is Multisite right for my situation?

Multisite is the right choice when you need to manage multiple WordPress sites under centralised control and they share enough in common — audience, platform, management team — to benefit from shared infrastructure. For sites that are genuinely independent with different owners and no shared management, separate installations are usually simpler and safer.

Can each site in a Multisite network have its own domain?

Yes. WordPress Multisite supports domain mapping — each site in the network can have its own custom domain that resolves to the network installation. This requires DNS configuration and either a domain mapping plugin or server-level wildcard setup, which we handle as part of the network configuration.

How do plugin updates work in a Multisite network?

Plugins are updated once at the network level and the update applies to all sites simultaneously. Network admins control which plugins individual site admins can activate. This is one of the main efficiency advantages of Multisite over separate installations.

Can sites in a Multisite network have different themes?

Yes. Themes can be activated at the network level and made available to all sites, or assigned to specific sites only. Each site admin can then choose from the themes the network admin has made available, or you can lock specific sites to a specific theme.
